An evening with marsh orchids

Writer's picture: WildstartsWildstarts

Some of the wetter areas of the South Downs are a fantastic place to see Southern Marsh Orchid.

A cluster of these magnificent pink flowers stood proudly by a path in the Arun Valley last night. These orchids are best recognised by the combination of their plain, pointed leaves and lightly-marked pink flowers.

There's certainly something mesmerising about orchids — it is a privilege just to be able to stop and admire them a while...

They are one of about 30 species of orchid to be found in Sussex and are currently in spectacular condition, though can be enjoyed into July.

It is the most widespread of the marsh orchids, but has suffered a 20 per cent loss of its historical UK range.
